Preparing for a Safe Boating Trip
One of the most important things to do before you head out on the water in your boat is to prepare! Safe boating includes preparation, knowledge, and awareness. Our team at Clarks Landing wants to help you have a successful boating trip, so we’ve put together a list of must-do tasks to complete before hitting the water.
1. Check Your Tow Gear
Transporting your boat on a trailer requires its own set of safety measures. If you’re lucky enough to already be docked, you can move ahead to the next step.
When you need to tow your boat, there are a handful of things you need to check before you begin your travels. You will need to:
- Check the tire pressure and tread of the trailer and tow vehicle tires
- Test all lighting, including turn signals, brake lights, and tail lights
- Double check all connections and safety features
- Make sure any items being stowed in the boat are correctly secured
- Test the brakes
- Evaluate the overall condition of your vehicle and trailer
2. Inspect and Gather All Safety Gear
Your safety gear can be the difference between encountering an unfortunate or dire situation. As you pack and plan to head to your favorite body of water, you need to inspect and take count of your safety equipment.
Before each trip, consider how many passengers you’ll be bringing and if everyone has a well-fitted life jacket. You also need to check your first aid kit to replace any previously used items and make sure you have your line and anchor if you plan to stay in one place on the water.
Also take inventory of your emergency kit, making sure flashlights, fire extinguishers, and other tools are all working properly.
3. Check the Weather
Of course the weather can change on a dime, but having a general idea of what to expect can be very helpful. The weather can directly affect what items you should pack, the clothes you should wear, and the timing of your boat trip! Download a weather app or bring a satellite radio on board to have access to weather updates at all times.
4. Prepare Your Passengers and Your Vessel
Lastly, it’s essential to check your boat for any signs of damage or wear that could result in a sticky situation after pushing off. Get into the habit of completing a pre-boating checklist, taking time to examine all controls, electronics, and the functionality of any components.
Once your boat is prepared, remember to prep your passengers! Discuss safe boating practices and allow any new boaters to ask questions before you head out.
